sing the blues: cry the blues

有一種情調感傷的美國黑人歌曲，就稱為the blues藍調，但習慣用語sing the blues或者cry the blues 不能按照字面意思解釋為吟唱藍調或者大唱藍調，而是to complain 訴苦的意思。

例句：I just spent two hours listening to Bill sing the blues about his girl friend leaving him for some other guys. I feel sorry for him but he ought to forget it: after all, it happened two years ago.

我剛花了整整兩小時聽Bill訴說女朋友怎么甩掉他跟了別人的傷心事。我當然為Bill 感到難過，但是我覺得Bill該把這事丟在腦后了，因為這畢竟是兩年前的往事了。
