讀者 Michelle 問：forward、toward、onward 等字，有時候寫成 forwards、towards、onwards，這是對的嗎？如果對，意思一樣嗎？什么時候要加 s，什么時候不加？
根據大部分的辭書，這一類字加不加 s 意思都一樣，可以完全互換，純屬地區或個人習慣的分別。有人觀察英式英語地區多會加 s，美式英語地區則通常沒 s，但也有人持相反的論調。隨著國際接觸頻繁，英式美式英語正在互相影響。
然而，當這些字用作形容詞的時候，就不應帶 s。例如：
He is quite backward in his thinking. 他的思想相當落伍。
Oxford English Dictionary 有關 forwards 一條，其中一段相當有趣：如果用 forward 來區別其他方向時（to express a definite direction viewed in contrast with other directions），習慣上會加 s。字典所引用的例句是：
If you move at all, it must be forwards.
